What's happening in February?

Welcome to the first Urban Plant Growers monthly newsletter! We’ll be sending these out within the first week of each month to highlight a few sustainability topics, let you know which products are running out fast, which products we have back in stock, and to notify you of any opportunities/miscellaneous community partnerships we may have!

What’s in the news this week?

This section will focus on climate, drought, food, and any other environmental news that happened over the last month.

  • Are Climate refuges real?Area’s that were thought to be ‘immune’ to climate change are known as climate refuges, however, recent findings suggest these ecosystems are becoming unstable in the face of these changes. This instability is becoming increasingly visible on a large scale with phenomena such as rainforest fires (like those seen in the Amazon and the Daintree) that were previously thought to be impossible, gradually becoming the new normal. Read the full article here.
  • Are you following the water restrictions? This article discusses Sydney’s water restrictions and ways to save water!

What you can do to help!

As we all know, the past few months have seen catastrophic fires affecting communities and bushlands all around Australia. This month’s top tips for sustainable living and community action are focused on helping communities affected by the bushfires.

  1. The Empty Esky Campaign – Much of rural Australia is struggling this summer, not only due to direct fires damage but also due to a lack of tourism because of them. Many rural businesses rely on peak-tourism months to make enough money to survive the quieter times of the year, however, this bushfire season has made it impossible for them to operate and generate a living. this initiative aims to help the fire affected communities by encouraging those with the means to take an ‘empty esky’ on a journey to a fire affected town with the intent to purchase local produce! To find a town affected or learn more about the initiative, visit; https://www.emptyesky.com.au/
  2. Donate to your local fire station - the RFS has worked tirelessly to protect our country so if you can spare a dollar or two and donate here; https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/volunteer/support-your-local-brigade
