• How does it work?

  Hydroponic Nutrients

  Hydroponics generally refers to food that is grown in water and without soil, often featuring LED grow lights and hydroponic nutrients. The Hydroponic nutrients contain the optimal quantities of all of the minerals which are generally contained in soil such as those nutrients that plants consume in large quantities like nitrogen, potassium and phosphate, as well as those required in smaller quantities such as boron, magnesium and calcium.

  LED Grow Lights

  The LED grow lights replicate the wavelengths of light that plants need to grow - which are primarily the red and blue spectrums. The result?  Hydroponics grows food using 90% less water and 60% less space - often achieving better yields in the process. It provides the perfect environment for growing - better root aeration, consistent water supply, a powerful light supply and so on - all resulting in optimal plant growth.

  

  

  
  

  Smart Soil Growing Medium

  The Indoor Smart Garden grows plants in a Hydroponic growing medium called smart soil instead of dirt. Smart Soil absorbs 3x its own weight in water, which it uniformly distributes throughout itself - allowing your plant to have consistent access to water, oxygen, and nutrients. The outcome of this is a mess-free solution that allows your kitchen to stay clean while your plants grow!

• Getting Started Growing

  You can grow most small plants in this unit. When using nutrients, you will need to mix and dissolve 2 grams of nutrients (or one level scoop of our nutrient spoon which comes with the set) every time you refill water after the plants have germinated. This is usually once a month in the beginning, but over time can shorten to up to an average of once every 2 weeks (depending on the type of plant/temperature). This bundle comes with a small jar of nutrients but you can also buy nutrients when you run out, or check out our Smart Garden Replant Pack

• Frequently Asked Questions

  Do instruction and tips come written or are they online?

  Both! When you buy one of our smart gardens you will receive a set of paper instructions that are super pretty to look at, and easy to read. If you lose these or are just hoping to lay your eyes on a work of art, you can check out our instructions which can all be found on this page.

  How do I replant my smart garden after my plants have been harvested?

  You will want to replant some new seeds for your next crop. To do this, you need to remove the smart soil from the container (all the brown cork-like stuff) and rinse it in water to remove all seeds and plant matter. Once you are satisfied that all plant matter has been removed from the medium, put it back in the pot and plant new seeds as if it were new! **Note. It is encouraged to rinse the medium with boiling water to sterilise the growing medium before planting new seeds. Alternatively, you could purchase new smart soil here.

  How do the lights work?

  There is a white light setting and a grow light setting. You need to use the grow light setting. To operate the light you will have to press the button located at the end of the light. Each press has a different function.
  1. First press - Turns on reading light
  2. Second press- Turns on grow light
  3. Pressing and holding - Turns the grow light on and activates a timer that will stay on for 16 hours, and off for 8. The button will appear as blue when this setting is on but the light is in its 8 hour rest mode.

  How often do I have to refill the water?

  Though you don't have to water hydroponic plants as regularly as a regular plant, they do still need water from time to time. Some of our units come with sensors that beep to notify you when the water needs topping up, however not all of them do so make sure you check the water every 2 weeks at ...

  Product beeps when the water is full

  The product contains a small plastic float inside the basin which rises and falls with the water level. When the water level is at its lowest point, the float causes the light to beep.

  After refilling, this float may get jammed in the bottom of the tube - causing the product to beep even when the water level is full.To fix this, simply dislodge the float so that it may rise to the water level.

  What is the best way to refill the water?

  1. Thoroughly mix in nutrients with water in a separate jug. We recommend the ratio of 1 spoon (provided with nutrient jar) to 1 Litre of water.
  2. Pour into the smart garden through the refill holes next to the light stand.
  3. Refill to the same ratio when the water runs out.

  What is the power output of the light source?

  Smart Gardens use a high-efficiency LED strip, which has an 8 Watt power demand. In contrast, a normal light bulb uses 60-100 Watts of electricity. This means our product uses just 8-13% of the electricity a conventional bulb does!

  Where is the ideal location to place the Indoor Smart Garden?

  The location that you place your indoor smart garden in can make an impact on it's growth, here are some tips for where to place your smart garden to get the best results:

  • Consider airflow - most plants need airflow across their leaves to aid transpiration (drawing out water through plant leaves and enabling the plant to suck out more water from the soil/basin around it). Placing your plants near a door or window can help with its growth!
  • Think about plant type - if you have a tropical plant it may want more heat and humidity, so place it near a window.
  • Put your plant somewhere that will remind you to check it
  If you stick to these simple tips, you should nail down the location of your product placement.

  Will the power adapter fit my power outlet?

  Our smart gardens come with an AU plug, which has been certified with the RCM Electrical safety mark - meaning it will work in all Australian household power outlets.
